Ren Vale

Editor at Cuffplay

Ren Vale is the editor at Cuffplay and the byline behind most of our identity, role, and safety writing. Ren leads the work of translating practitioner experience and peer-reviewed research into guides that don't talk down to anyone.

Ren writes about the journey from “I'm curious about kink” to “I understand who I am.” The work draws on five-plus years of community engagement, the original psychometric work behind the Kink Test, and ongoing feedback from tens of thousands of test-takers.

Ren's editing principle is simple: kink education should be honest, non-judgmental, and grounded in real experience — not clinical jargon, not porn-adjacent stereotypes, just useful answers to the questions people actually ask. Every piece Ren ships passes through the wider editorial team (M., V., G.) for tone, citation, and safety review.

What Ren writes about

  • Identity guides — how to read your own signals without forcing a label too early
  • Specific kinks — DDLG, pet play, primal play, brat dynamics, others — written from inside the practice rather than from the outside looking in
  • Safety & consent — aftercare, safewords, negotiation, red flags — reviewed for risk honesty
  • Community navigation — reviews of FetLife / Feeld / bdsmtest.org / others, written by someone who has actually used them

How Ren works with the wider team

Ren writes the byline; the broader editorial team reviews. M. checks tone and the practitioner voice. V. catches citation drift in anything that touches peer-reviewed psychology. G. reads every safety section for risk honesty and the absence of pathologising language. Read our editorial policy for how the review process runs end-to-end.

What Ren is — and isn't

Ren is a practitioner-editor with five-plus years in the U.S. kink community, not a licensed therapist or clinician. When a guide touches medical, psychological, or legal ground beyond practitioner expertise, it cites the relevant peer-reviewed literature and links to credentialed resources (NCSF, Network La Red, Kink Aware Professionals). Ren doesn't make claims outside that lane.
